Copia y pega: REPORTAJE: VIDAS AL LÍMITE

Hoy por casualidad he visto este reportaje. La eutanasia es un tema controvertido. Yo personalmente hoy no quiero dar mi opinión.

Estaba condenado a morir sufriendo.

No había vida.

Contar me libera.

Me gusta ir y estar solo ahí. En realidad, he vivido.

Me he traído esto.

He leído algunas cosas que...

¿A qué he venido yo aquí, a tomar pastelitos, a bailar unas sevillanas?

Debes protegerte, me digo.

A veces me llevo papel y escribo algo.

Hambre dice él no tengo nunca.

Y me acompaña.

---------------------ENGLISH VERSION-----------------------------------------

Carlos Santos was a man of the world. She loved life so much he wanted his rule until the end. He had an incurable tumor. He was sentenced to die in pain. But he rebelled. Association attended the Right to die with dignity. They accompanied him on his last wishes. On 10 November decided to take the lead to disease. Breakfast and took a walk before taking a lethal cocktail. He died sleeping in a hotel room. Before wanted to tell his story. Claimed that his case would serve to reopen the debate on euthanasia.

Typically, older people are not reflected in the people of his age, but an exception will tell you that I lived on 9 November, to meet Velicia Carlos Santos, a man of 66 years (two more than me) had traveled to Madrid to take his life. It was after eating, at your company through the Puerta del Sol, towards downtown hotel that would expire the next day, when I discovered the existence of a curious synchronicity between their movement and mine. We were not just a man and another man, were two elderly individuals with tics characteristic of older individuals, two elders to almost any target audience would be situated in the best, in the last third of his life.

"I said, 'Make a living will. You have months"

"My house looks like a pharmacy of pills available"

"I hope that this time tomorrow and be finished"

"I've been getting rid of everything. Now I do not wear or chain around your neck, do not wear anything. The boat has reached the end of the trip"

"I was a lion with women. Today I am a kitten tarnished"

"I've lived a rich life, which most have not been able to live"

"Will prepare the potions, I'll take and I Lay"

The hotel room, without achieving the status of a suite, was large and bright and was composed of two distinct spaces, one for sleeping and another to be. The first had a double bed, with their night tables, and second, a sitting area and a coffee table, all ready, as usual, around the television set. Between the two areas was a small step intended to underline the difference of level, the inequality of their functions. The windows, spacious, overlooking a terrace from which to appreciate the rooftops of old Madrid.

Once off, Carlos on one end of the couch, me in the chair closest to that end, shaking mirror accentuated. So while he spoke in a tone which seemed to detect a certain euphoria (the one preceding the final act?), I recognized her eyebrows trimming awkward that I apply to my own and discovered in his nostrils and ears hairs hunts survivors who are often victims, after a certain age, these fibers. It was not all: I also saw in his eyes that curious mixture of defiance and helplessness that I find in mine when I stumble over my face in the mirrors in the elevators.

"I received the first hack-Carlos began to tell me fifteen years ago, when no more give me two serious heart attacks. In the second, according to all devices on the wall, was dead. You know that everything is monitored on the screens and the screens were dead. And me too. These bastards, I thought, now bury me alive. The doctors asked me if I listened to move a finger or blink, but I had no energy for anything. Nothing. Dead, dead. Those things in life, it is obvious that revived and resurrected as a baby crying. It was very hard because I was running, sprinting, and I had to give up sport. I have two pieces of heart necrosis. That will not ever recover. I have heart failure, tachycardia and arrhythmia.

"But it seems that you could lead a fairly normal life since I heard myself say.

In normal thing! I had come down, land. I spent three or four years too bad because I felt useless. I stopped working because the travel agencies would not hire me (it was a tour guide). I wanted to return to work and I did the first I had to go to Seville and I did not. The driver had to stop the bus and call an ambulance took me to the emergency, which the group was abandoned.

So?

I had to acknowledge my life and raised me very well: going to kill me, I thought, but my way, my air, I go to the South Seas. I'll go to Australia, thence to New Zealand. From there go down and when you get to the islands of the South Seas I'll find the wizard in office, I will be friends with him and the night I want to leave him, say "Brujo, place me, I sleep and do not want to wake up." That's what I had in mind, but as John Lennon said, life is what passes you while you insist on doing other things. Well, I do not know what happened. But I was feeling like shit. I've spent ten or twelve years without being with an aunt because he had panicked. The doctors told me: "You're not the lion that was before ...". I've been a lion in every sense: labor, women, everything. Now I am a kitten and tarnish. Aunts, out. There was no life.

While listening to Charles, count the number of lamps in the room, first from left to right and then right to left. And I get the same result, if not a disaster happen. It is an ancient mechanism, child, to deal with anxiety. Count me free. So now I count the fingers of the hands of my interlocutor, always in both directions. And when you get up to go to the bathroom because you have urinary incontinence, I count the steps you take to go and facing the back, and I feel a great relief if your number matches. All this while listening. Telling me now is the herniated disk, which appeared later, and he had to get into the operating room.

It was great he says, because he could not jump. Hardship, deprivation and hardship. The column gave me continuous pain. Until I did resonances and the bug appeared.

What bug?

Radicular cyst did not know since when was there, and is the worst thing you can not run or play because you get paralyzed, the brain.

Is that where the nerve endings come?

Everything. Is the inside of the spine. Is just between the S2 and S3 near the sphincters of the urine and feces.

When did they discover?

A year ago. And I say there is no solution, there is nothing to do. I have said many times, many chiropractors, until the courts gave me 65% disability told me, "Mr. Santos, then you are living will because it months, it has no cure, no solution, there is nothing ". What are you doing? Then I go to the U.S., I buy a gun and I'll shoot, or throw me a bridge ... I have also gone to Málaga buildings that I know, to look from the eighth floor and say: well, if I throw from here I'll kill myself ... But I am a peaceful person, happy to soft music, classical, harmonious, I do not like noise, I've always been a pacifist, I have never fought with anyone, I do not like violence or unpleasant things often attract me mad both homosexuals, when I go are women. And he asked: "But why, what the hell do I have?". And I answered: "You're so sweet, so gentle, so tender, so thin, so skinny, so little, you invite protect you." So I think those options was very nasty. Exit first contacted, the Australians, and then with Dignitas, which is in Switzerland. The Swiss were the ones who gave me the address right to die with dignity in Barcelona, and these, in Madrid. And here I am.

Besides the problem of bowel control, what other way is shown deterioration?

Every time I have less energy. In the morning, when I leave home after breakfast and taken , I have no energy, I can not walk more than ten minutes without sitting down to rest. The same thing happens when I stand, I have to find a chair to sit, because I do not feel well. Need to sit down or, better, lie down.

Are you heavily medicated?

Yes, of course, with all the side effects of medication. My house looks like a pharmacy of pills available.

What kind of pills?

Everything you can imagine, all, forty or fifty boxes, see if there is. In the morning, five or six pills, at noon, five or six days ago, same thing. And at intervals, depending on what hurts me because several others. The fact is that whenever I have to take the pill with me. Look, I'll take one for calm.

You want water from the minibar?

No, the tap.

Carlos Santos retires to the bathroom to take the pill. I note that the light has changed. The sun does not directly in the window, and when we reached the hotel (about 4.30 pm), but the room still seems happy. I'm the one who is somber, awe. While I wait for his return, I reread the letter written to the local police in Madrid, where his death prompted to notify the owner of the boarding house where he lives in Malaga, so that "as I have no family or heirs, has my belongings, clothes, etc., whatever. " Following the signature, adds a kind of postscript begging to withdraw their road car "before they break or rend." As it slows down, also review the letter to the judge, where his sufferings after summarizing and detailing the terrible future that awaits him as the disease progresses (absolute lack of control sphincters very intense pain, paralysis and death), claims that his willingness to die is the result of its values and that no one has led to this decision it takes on a "free, voluntary, without anyone having to cooperate as necessary, directly or indirectly, to carry it out."

As Charles did not just come out of the bathroom, I start to count, to entertain the waiting, the voice of the letter to the judge. Appears when I go for 65.

Was it a tranquilizer? referring to the pill wonder just taken.

Yes, but low Diazepam 2.5.

And to take things to sleep?

Huy, yeah! I do not do anything either.

The vicious cycle of tolerance and addiction.

There will come a time when ... Well, there will be moments because I hope that this time tomorrow is already finished.

The light in the room has changed again and my mood has darkened. Must be the five and a half or a quarter to six o'clock. I get up and light a lamp while Carlos is now talking about an unpublished book in which he has worked for the last fifteen years of his life. It is entitled The man divided.

- Who is the man divided? wonder.

I'm saying, I and the world. Countries that I have fallen in love, like Italy, India, France ... You know what that is Nepal, Thailand, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Gambia ...? And Europe and my own home. There is a place that is one of my favorites, the tomb of Galla Placidia in Ravenna. I like to go and be alone there. Land close your eyes to see nothing and let my imagination run and try to imagine what was the prelude to the end of the Western Roman Empire. Actually, I've lived. Others have not lived even half. And I've lived in luxury because it was all paid.

Is your favorite city?

London is my city for many reasons. One, because it was the first site where I found happiness. In Spain was never happy my father beat me fiercely, like the bastards of the Jesuits, did you put your fingers well, end, and gave you the rule. All this, a very unhappy childhood. My father and I lived in a small apartment and child, every morning, I got out of bed, which was in the room, went to the kitchen, which was where the radio, and moved the dial until you hear a foreign language . That left him.

I also recognize in that childhood dream of being a foreigner, even at the cost of not understanding anything. Do you understand anything the locals? Being a foreigner, in those years would be as much as you could hope for in life. What a brutal image, I think, of the child to the search for a language unintelligible, a life again!

While Carlos gives details about his book, his life in London (where he lived for several years) and his journeys across the planet, I understand that this man got his dream of being a foreigner, even paying the heavy price of rootlessness , loneliness, isolation. Then I escaped the first yawn, which is an alarm signal. In extreme situations, or live as dramatic, I do, in addition to counting, yawning, as if I was bored. I defend myself well in excess of reality, anxiety, panic. Yawn at funerals and in intensive care units of hospitals as a young man yawning in exams and job interviews. Yawning means I'm screwed. You're screwed, Juanjo, I say, while counting on his fingers the syllables of "you're screwed, Juanjo (seven, one heptasílabo) and I have the temptation to ask for their little rites Santos against disease, against bad luck against misfortune.

Fortunately, he has begun to speak of euthanasia, its need to give testimony to help generate a public debate on the issue. In this issue, as elsewhere, appears very cerebral, including economic data and statistics about suicide that do not interest me too. Affect me more than the emotional, the fact that one has to die when so decided, in secret, in hotel rooms rather than on the bed itself, or in a hospital, staffed by properly professionals and surrounded by his people. Charles was given the same out of the way in one place or another, has no one and their homeland is the world. Ensures that Europe as I know the rooms of my house.

"When I came to Madrid to speak for the first time with the added DMD asked when I wanted to. "Tomorrow," I replied, "I'm here, tomorrow." Overall, the four things that he had given it the four or five friends, and savings I leave to DMD, they told me they do not owe anything. I know, I replied, but what I do, do not smoke, do not drink and not as I find no pleasure in anything. What do I spend the money? Earlier, in Manchester, I loved Gloria buy cakes, marzipan ... Now you can offer me the moon and I will not smile, you do not provoke me with the problem of gastric juices ... I do not spend like eating, did not go home with nothing. What I want is to stop living, and if it can be before, better than later. In the pension only clothes I have left because of no avail. I brought this.

"This" is a handbag with which he made the trip from Malaga and luggage containing the last of his life: a pair of pajamas, a shirt, socks, slippers and underpants.

One change he summarizes. It is assumed that this time tomorrow I will no longer lack for nothing.

In the portfolio there is also a boat, wrapped in a plastic bag containing, he explains, the "cocktail of self-liberation", comprising a hypnotic, falling asleep, and a set of anti-malaria drugs in high doses fatal. The formula is available to members of DMD in the Guide called self-liberation, and its components are readily available, most without a prescription. It is, moreover, the same combination as recommended by almost all the associations worldwide.

Although it has been moved to tears by recalling some aspects of his childhood, the general attitude of Carlos is a chill overwhelms. I think perhaps is his way of defending this excess of reality, as mine is yawning or having vocal, moldings, finger lamps ... Then I remember that at some point, when we went to the hotel, said the opportunity to speak with the director to make him a discount.

"I do discount on all hotels added when I identify myself as a tour guide.

"Ten percent? I foolishly asked.

What ten percent! angry response Fifty percent say the least!

The decision out of the way had not changed at all its customs. So, before traveling to Madrid was to Renfe for prices and discounts given that had the Gold Card for over 60 years. Since paid it all with the credit card, also consulted the hotel rates to ensure the current account leave the precise amount charged to each his own. And calculated that the best time to drink the potion would be around noon, so that volunteers would accompany DMD remain free mid-afternoon: "Better than at night," he said in the email that listed all practical details.

As the evening continues to fall, and with it my mood, I get up and turn on another light that is somewhat removed from my position. I have to take five steps one way, but I only go back four. Bad thing.

The Swiss say sitting down again seems very cold. I have read some things ...

Like I said insists Carlos, I was born in Spain, but that does not make me Spanish. When I came to England, I said, 'Look, Carlos, here things are done well, not like in your country, and do well from the beginning because if you do not have to go back to them and that costs time and money. " That was the reality, the Spanish arrived with those wooden suitcases tied with rope. I was one of those. The day I said "you're one of us, you are a true professional", that day was for me ... So all this about me cold sweats, I do not say anything. What cold? What I have come here to make cupcakes, dancing around Seville? Not in the mood to dance Sevillanas and I can dance, I can hardly move. Defíneme coldness. To me what matters to me is that I say, "Mr. Santos, the day that, at such time, you appear in this direction ...". Tomorrow I will rise, desayunaré around anything, and at about twelve or two, the earliest time, prepare the potions, I take, I'm lying ... DMD volunteers will stay with me until I'm asleep. In Switzerland, pentobarbital, is fifteen minutes. Ya, stop breathing, and out. Fifteen minutes, what we spend hours and hours and hours.

Do you like reading? I think to ask, I look like an idiot.

Yes, I've been a bookworm, but I can not. My head is now only one thing and nothing more. I've given away all my books.

Did you have a good library?

Yes, large, very wide. I got rid of everything. I am a man of whims. Look what I belt.

Gets up to me to see.

Very nice, I do say watching the buckle, consisting of a large coin silver, which reads the motto of the French Republic (Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité).

It is a belt that is a jewel of pure silver. I've designed myself, I have done is a single belt. When I brought up something designed by me. I took a paper and a pen and I began to draw what he wanted. As I have always had friends of all, Mallorca was one who was a jeweler and he made my twins, my ring ...

Go easy with the step will tell you that you have already fallen a few times.

... I have been getting rid of everything. Now, you see, do not wear or chain around your neck, do not wear anything, the boat has reached the end of the trip.

Are you homesick?

No, I have lived a good life, rich, that most mortals have not lived.

What if we go down for a coffee?

Whatever.

We left the room. Story mentally the steps we take to the elevator, the seconds it takes to get the number of letters in the word elevator (eight, three vowels and five consonants, a rarity). We settled into a table in the cafe. I ask him a green tea and tea with cold milk. We bring a drink with pasta that he does not crave. Offered to me, but the rejection, noting that she is embarrassed to stay there. In this, I notice something in the atmosphere that adds fear to grief, as if it were Sunday afternoon. And it's Sunday, It's Tuesday, but I realize that this Tuesday is a holiday in Madrid (la Almudena). I must go, I say, I have reached my limit, I'm no longer able to suppress the yawns, or to stop counting, I counted the buttons on the waiter's jacket, the number of floor tiles, the number of legs summed all the chairs in the cafeteria ... Carlos Santos just wanted me to help him bear witness to his decision to provoke a debate about euthanasia. I have too much material to give such testimony, to open once again, the discussion. Do not want to look at this older man (going to die tomorrow) every time you take the cup to his lips, every time he remembers his desire to become foreign, whenever I see with this mixture of helplessness and defiance feature my eyes. The solidarity has limits, and I have reached mine. Protect yourself, I think.

"If you ask me to tell you a typical day of my life ... -Is saying in that moment Carlos Santos.

I ask you say.

I get up at eight, half past eight. At half past nine or ten and I go home. Where do I go? A library. Why? Because, first, I need to sit, I can not stand. Second, I can not in a cafe three or four hours reading newspapers and taking my tea. In the library I have to take or tea, I have all the papers at my disposal and climb above the first floor and I have Internet. And I have two emails, one only for the press in English, Financial Times, The Economist, The Herald Tribune, The New York Times, The Daily Telegraph ... Finally, the best press, you keep saying what the hell you goes to Spain, which continues the story revalued 48% and that if they expect to sell. So two weeks ago. They are double what they are worth and are still down. I spend all morning in the library, even the two that close. Sometimes I get paper and write something. As the home of retired and return to the library until eight. At this time I'm going home because it is a bad neighborhood. It is night, I'm afraid, and I do not go out. This is a day of my life from Monday to Friday. On Saturdays and Sundays, as there is no library, I try to organize the other way in a nice bar I've found, have several newspapers, I read ...

"Well, Carlos, I'll let say in full attack of phobia.

And then, to reduce the roughness, add:

Do you go to bed soon? Do you want to drink or is too early for dinner?

Hunger I have never said he did not. If then I have hunger, I have a light, otherwise I get in bed, I'm tired.

I get up, get up, we looked like two old people.

Where are you going? question.

A Great Way to take a taxi.

I'll walk.

And with me. It is already dark night and the streets can feel the festive atmosphere on Sunday, even Tuesday. In this stops, we stop, look me in the eyes raise my head a little (it is shorter than me) and asks:

You too are a member of DMD?

Too.

Ah, it says, and continued walking, now silent. It is the first time all evening that exists between us is a silence that he did not urge fill with words.

Has cooled then I say the time to count the syllables in "has cooled" (five, one pentasyllable).

He nods yes.

Upon arriving at Callao, and as it seems to me that is afraid to stray, I ask if you want to accompany him back to the hotel. He says no, that although the drugs you disoriented, is set well where we have come. We give a long hug.

Will I see you tomorrow? question when we get rid of the long embrace (the expression "long hug", I reckon, has eleven letters, five vowels and six consonants).

I do not know procedure, as I am sure I will not have the courage to go with him.

While I am waiting for a taxi, I see Carlos Santos away back with characteristic movements of a man of my age.

The next day, Carlos Santos got up, ate breakfast and went out to resolve in a Madrid branch of your bank a few bureaucratic issues still outstanding. At noon (about 12.45) rose in the company of a volunteer and a volunteer with DMD to their large, bright room.

What do you think if I put on my pajamas? asked volunteers.

Before he answered and went into the bathroom, "which led to little in pajamas and slippers (no socks had been removed.) Carefully folded clothes that had just come off and put it in the closet. He then took the ID card and placed it on the table, on a small set of neatly folded bills. Nearby, left the letter to the judge and police.

Then he pulled out of the boat holding the tablets, which had already sprayed, and placed them in a glass, then pouring a portion of a strawberry yogurt that I had bought before boarding. Stirred well with a spoon until a smooth dough (which took time, for how much) and strawberry yogurt turned blue due to chemical reaction. It took the "cocktail" with a spoon ensuring volunteers was not so bad compared with castor oil of his childhood. He was sitting on the couch, perhaps at the same end from which he had spoken to me the day before. Leaving the shoe on the floor, put his feet (with socks) on the edge of the table and waited for the effects of the drink by telling his life to the volunteers. Excited again, they said, he remembered some passages from his unhappy childhood. As the minutes passed, he spoke more slowly, but without ever losing coherence. He fell asleep about 13.40, and half an hour later, amid the deep sleep, she stopped breathing, no rales, without suffering, without pain, thus escaping a horrible clinical horizon. DMD volunteers left the room leaving everything as it was.

The next day, first thing in the morning, another volunteer with DMD telephoned the hotel to warn them what would be in room 511. The press, as usual in these cases, did not account for the event. The death of Carlos Santos Velicia, if not because he wanted to remain witness to it, would only have served to fatten the jumble of statistics on suicide. Carlos Santos Velicia has seven syllables, so that if a line would be a heptasílabo.
